I've gone back and forth on this.  Wingware paid the fee for a year or 
more (I forget the details except that it was a pain to pay for a large 
chunk of time at once) and then stopped since it seemed silly for a 
bunch of programmers to need a service like that.

However, as someone put it at PyCon in the Advocacy BoF, meetup is a 
"marketing tool" -- it is the way many people find the group -- and thus 
important to the outreach that a user's group does to bring in more 
users to Python.

My current take is it's worth maintaining a meetup account.
